He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

A playful, early intermediate spiritual in a light swing style. The third verse briefly shifts into a gentle lullaby (“He’s got the itty bitty baby”) before returning to the cheerful swing. Ends with a fun, smile-worthy finish. Perfect for recital or light church settings.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

A soft, expressive spiritual piano arrangement with rich chords and a subtle touch of jazz in the introduction and interlude. The music gradually rises, painting the picture of the chariot coming home—ideal for reflective moments in church or personal worship.

I’ve Got Peace Like a River

A flowing, calm arrangement that captures the steady movement of water. Includes right-hand scale passages and a final verse with left-hand melody and gentle accompaniment—great for building expression and control at the early intermediate level.

Joshua Fought the Battle

A lively swing-style spiritual with strong rhythmic energy. The left hand provides a simple, steady foundation while the right hand carries the playful melody. Ends with a dramatic descending scale. Perfect for adding excitement to a recital or offertory.

When the Saints Go Marching In

A bright, upbeat spiritual piano solo with a punchy left hand and engaging rhythm. A fun introduction and interlude add variety, while the final verse slows into a more reflective ending. Great for both performance and church use.

Were You There?

A slow, hymn-like arrangement that captures the depth and reverence of the text. Begins with choral-style chords and gradually adds gentle movement in the left hand, creating a thoughtful, expressive piece for worship or Easter settings.

Note from the Arranger

I had so much fun revisiting these traditional spirituals! It’s been on my list to arrange spirituals for a while now, so I was doubly excited when it came time to do these.

Sometimes, it may seem like Spirituals have shallow messages, but as I arranged, I realized that these all point to God and the promises He gives His children.

While I hope you have fun playing these arrangements, I equally pray that they encourage your heart and point your focus to God.
