About I Must Tell Jesus early intermediate piano solo

• Special technical notes: left hand in treble clef, hand crossover in end

This has long been one of my favorite hymns on prayer. I love that reminder that, no matter what is going on, I can tell Jesus.

It was a joy to arrange this for early intermediate pianists, keeping it simpler, yet making it beautiful. There is a hint of minor tonality in the introduction that continues through the arrangement. It ends with a beautiful hand crossing reaching up to high C.

About Sweet Hour of Prayer early intermediate piano solo

• Time Signature: 6/8
• Key Signature: C major
• Special technical notes: 16th notes, slightly altered melody

This arrangement of Sweet Hour of Prayer begins in a very flowing, moving style. I enjoy playing unique chords in Sweet Hour of Prayer, and included them in this arrangement. This means that one note is actually altered (A-flat instead of A) to go with the chord. 

While there are sixteenth notes in this arrangement, because it is in compound meter (6/8), they are still only a half beat each. 

About Near to the Heart of God early intermediate piano solo

• Key Signature: C major
• Special technical notes: slightly altered melody

Usually, I have a clear melody-driven introduction. But as I was working on Near to the Heart of God, it fit very well to have a more lyrical intro. This will also provide good practice for the pianist to keep a flow between both hands evenly.

Because the introduction starts with the lyrical theme, I continued it into the first verse, so the right hand has some extra notes added to the melody to keep the lyrical flow.

About Take Time to be Holy early intermediate piano solo

• Special technical notes: left hand melody, right hand in bass clef

One of the things I’m grateful for with doing these collections is that it forces me to arrange hymns I wouldn’t necessarily pick on my own. Take Time to be Holy is one such hymn. While I’ve always loved the message, it’s a very slow hymn that I haven’t spent much time with.

It was a joy to give the hymn my own, unique setting. In every collection, I try to have a left hand melody feature, and Take Time to be Holy surprised me by being the one that worked well with a left hand melody.  

About Tell it to Jesus early intermediate piano solo

• Key Signature: C major
• Special technical notes: dotted 8th + 16th notes in melody & left hand accompaniment

This may be the anomaly of the entire collection, because it is upbeat and cheerful. I think that is fitting, as prayer doesn’t always need to be a serious endeavor. We can be equally joyful as thoughtful while we pray. 

This arrangement of Tell it to Jesus has a fun, rhythmic left hand that propels the arrangement forward. The light syncopation in the left hand matches the natural syncopation in the melody, making it easier for the student to match.

Arranger's Note for Whispered Prayer

It is no coincidence that arranging this collection falls during a time when God is convicting me about my personal prayer life. Funny how God works that way, doesn’t it?

These hymns are a good reminder for how important prayer is in our daily walk. It’s a time to communicate with God, to have our hearts yielded and ready for His response, and also a time to worship and praise God.
